K9 SECTION

The Township of Derry Police Department currently has three K-9 Teams. Each K-9 Team consists of the K-9 and their handler. The current teams are Officer Garth Warner and K-9 Renko, and Officer Anthony Clements and K-9 Zaro and Officer Jason Rode and K-9 Cigany. Each K-9 is a male German Shepherd who lives with their handlers when not on duty.

The trained Police Service Dog can perform a vital service to the community. His superior sensory capabilities provide competent and extremely effective assistance to law enforcement officials. He can search for suspects and illegal narcotics with great ease and intensity, resulting in officer safety and less time expended on certain investigations.

In 1980, the Township of Derry Police Department purchased their first K-9. Fana, a female German Shepherd. Fana was obtained from Mandelyn Kennels in California. She was trained for the detection of illegal drugs and some patrol functions, such as tracking. Fana's handler was Lieutenant Ronald O. Gramigni. The K-9 Unit has since grown to three Teams, consisting of a K-9 and its handler. From the first dog to the most recent, all were purchased through generous donations from local businesses and organizations throughout the Township of Derry community. We do not have room to list all of those organizations, businesses, or persons, but we would like to take this moment, and say thank you to all who made donations towards the program.

All K-9 Teams are trained under A. W. "Bill" Castle III, of Castle K-9, Inc., Mechanicsburg, PA. He is a Master Trainer with the North American Police Work Dog Association and the Pennsylvania Police Work Dog Association. All Teams are required to certify annually through both of the aforementioned associations in the categories of Police Utility and Narcotic Detection Team.

Aside from assisting officers from the Township of Derry Police Department, the K-9 Teams are called upon by neighboring police departments and various State and Federal law enforcement agencies to assist in investigations.

The K-9 Unit is currently under the direct supervision of Sergeant Kenneth W. Condran, and any inquiries into speeches or demonstrations should be directed to him.
